John Chrysostom’s Adversus Judaeos I

The history of the early church is in no small degree also a history of self-definition with respect to competing religious
groups. Early on this gave rise to an aggressive polemic tradition among the leading members of the Christian church both
toward enemies from within – defined as heretics – and other religions, not least Judaism. An example of the threat which Judaism was perceived to pose is shown in its most vitriolic tone by John Chrysostom, a towering fourth century father of the church, in his sermons Adversus Judaeos. This article is an analysis of the invective form in the first of these sermons.
