The article discusses the grassroots initiative Civic Desire [in Danish: Borgerlyst] and the format “Conversation Salons” [in Danish: samtalesaloner] with a focus on the role of conversation, the semi public nature of the salons, and their potential as a mode of rhetorical citizenship. It is argued that conversation salons in themselves do not constitute a vernacular public sphere as a forum for action at a civic level, but that they nonetheless can be considered a proto public for vernacular rhetoric and as such represent a mode of propaedeutic rhetorical citizenship.
